Hockey Night Punjabi call makes Crosby’s Game 2 overtime-winner that much better

Sidney Crosby’s first career playoff overtime-winner came on a perfectly placed shot, but his great goal is made even better thanks to the incredible soccer-style goal call from Hockey Night Punjabi’s Harnarayan Singh.

Sidney Crosby scored the first playoff overtime-winner of his career Monday night, and while there were undoubtedly some great calls of the tally on radio and television, none come close to the way Hockey Night Punjabi play-by-play voice Harnarayan Singh exploded following Crosby’s marker.

When the play started, it sounded like Singh was already on his feet, but when Crosby’s shot beat Tampa Bay Lightning netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy over the shoulder, Singh let loose one of the best overtime game-winner calls of the post-season. It’s got that big-game goal feel to it, and it’s hard not to smile when he holds Crosby’s name for five full seconds. Seems like he would have gone longer, too, had he not run out of breath:

If this was the call for a winner in Game 2, we want this series and every one after it to go to overtime in Game 7.

There’s something about the soccer-style goal calls that really works with hockey. It’s something ESPN Desportes’ Arley Londono has done with the Florida Panthers’ broadcasts over the past season, and Singh’s calls throughout this post-season have been outstanding.

It’s not just fans loving Singh’s goal calls, though. During the second round, Singh got the attention of the Penguins with his call of Nick Bonino’s Game 1 tally, and his refrain of “Bonino Bonino Bonino” has caught on in Pittsburgh to the point the team’s official Twitter account is using it in scoring the Penguins’ goals.
