The hockey community suffered a huge loss Thursday with the passing of veteran journalist and CapGeek.com founder/operator Matthew Wuest. His work – which included contributions to THN – will be remembered as fondly as he will.
The hockey world was mourning the loss Thursday of veteran journalist Matthew Wuest, who succumbed to colon cancer in Halifax.
Wuest’s work appeared in numerous publications including The Hockey News, but the former Metro Halifax sports reporter made his biggest impact with the creation of CapGeek.com, an astonishingly detailed and revolutionary website that expertly covered virtually all elements of the NHL’s salary cap system. Everyone – from media to fans to league executives – relied on CapGeek to discover player salaries, looming free agents and much more. When Wuest suddenly and permanently shut down the website in early January of this year due to health concerns, the hockey community was united in its hope he would recover. To say the Stanley, N.B., native will be missed is an incredible understatement.
The Hockey News extends its deep condolences to Wuest’s wife Melanie Patten, and his extended family and friends – a group that includes everyone at THN.
