Hurricanes get Jokinen from Tampa Bay for Brookbank, Melichar and pick

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Carolina Hurricanes acquired left-winger Jussi Jokinen from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday for Wade Brookbank, Josef Melichar and a fourth-round draft pick in 2009.

Jokinen, 25, has six goals and 10 assists in 46 games this season with the Lightning. He joins a Carolina team fighting for one of the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

“Jussi is a skilled, two-positional player that can be used in all situations,” Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said in a statement. “He will add depth to our team at an important time of the season.”

Jokinen is in his fourth NHL season. He started his career with Dallas and has 53 goals and 108 assists in 281 NHL games.

Brookbank, a 31-year-old forward, has one goal in 28 games for the Hurricanes this season while Melichar, a 30-year-old defenceman, has four assists in 15 games.
