HAMILTON – Joe Jensen’s tiebreaking goal in the third period led the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 3-2 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Wednesday in American Hockey League action.
Nathan Smith and Chris Minard also scored for the Penguins. Greg Stewart and Cory Urquhart replied for the Bulldogs (7-8-0-3). Smith’s fifth goal of the season gave the Bulldogs a lead 4:08 into the first period.
The Bulldogs evened the score 1-1 with just 23 seconds left in the first when Greg Stewart’s attempted cross-ice pass found its way to the back of Wilkes-Barre’s net.
Minard restored the Penguins’ one-goal lead at 2:24 of the second period when his slap shot snuck under the glove hand of Bulldogs goaltender Jaroslav Halak.
Hamilton responded at the 10:06 mark of the second when Urquhart scored his fifth goal of the campaign. Matt D’Agostini’s initial shot was stopped by Wilkes-Barre’s netminder Ty Conklin and Urquhart buried the rebound with a shot to the top left corner of the Penguins net.
Jensen sealed the win for the Penguins (7-8-0-3) at 15:14 of the final period.
The Bulldogs were 1-for-4 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Halak turned aside 21 of 24 shots in a losing effort, while Conklin made 29 saves on 31 shots to earn the victory.
