The NTDP will rock special Star Wars jerseys for the fourth time, while celebrating the program’s sixth Star Wars night
Welcome to the first Jersey Hound blog, ripped from the magazine and deposited on your screen. When the occasion calls for it, we’re going to have jersey-themed posts and the first one brings together USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program and the venerable Star Wars franchise.
This weekend, the NTDP will rock special Star Wars jerseys for the fourth time, while celebrating the program’s sixth Star Wars night (for the first two years, they just had patches). The brain child of communications and marketing manager Jake Wesolek, Star Wars night has been a big hit for the program, though the special jerseys took some convincing (USA Hockey is understandably protective of the Red, White and Blue). Wesolek’s Star Wars promotions date back to his time with IHL Port Huron, where he met Jon Leopold of the Great Lakes Garrison 501st Legion – a.k.a. the folks in the stormtrooper and Darth Vader costumes.
As per tradition, the jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. Some prominent players involved in the auctions include Auston Matthews (whose sweater went for $839), Jack Eichel ($622) and Matthew Tkachuk ($720).
Let’s take a look at the goods, starting with this year’s edition.
