A late December game between the Anaheim Jr. Ducks and Los Angeles Jr. Kings got the NHL treatment, as a flash mob complete with analysts, announcers, fans, and in-game entertainment surprised the two teams. The resulting video is great.
Much like the Battle of Alberta between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, the Freeway Faceoff between the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings has become a heated rivalry simply due to proximity. That trickles all the way down to the junior level, too.
Before a Jr. Ducks and Jr. Kings game, Fox Sports West decided to create the first ever Jr. Freeway Faceoff, bringing in fans, in-game entertainment, announcers, analysts, and cheerleaders, all in an attempt to bring the big league feel to the junior league game. The result was fantastic.
For those wondering, yes, Eetu Selanne, who scored the game winner for the Kings with little over five minutes remaining, is the son of Anaheim Ducks legendary winger Teemu Selanne. The same Teemu Selanne who will be honored and have his jersey retired by the Ducks this weekend.
The game took place at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, Calif., but it felt like a little slice of the NHL right at home for the Jr. Kings. Kudos to Fox Sports West for giving a group of kids who may not ever see big league action one game that they can remember for the rest of their lives.
