Junior goalie Storm Phaneuf suspended nine games for kicking player with skate

The Quebec League has handed down a nine-game suspension to Chicoutimi Sagueneens’ Storm Phaneuf after the goaltender kicked an opponent who fell into the crease.

The Quebec League announced yesterday that Chicoutimi Sagueneens goaltender Storm Phaneuf has been suspended for a total of nine games after kicking an opponent in the chest.

Phaneuf – no relation to Dion, if you were wondering – kicked an opponent during a Nov. 30 contest against the Drummondville Voltigeurs. The kick struck the felled Voltigeur in the chest:

Much like the process in the NHL, the QMJHL has released a statement that includes reasoning for the suspension. That rationale mentions that the opposing player, Dylan Montcalm, was pushed into the goal before he was kicked with the skate.

If ten games doesn’t seem too severe, it should be noted that this is the first suspension of Phaneuf’s career and it’s rare for the QMJHL to suspend players for such a lengthy time. Eight games of the suspension are those handed down by the league and one is the result of an automatic suspension to Phaneuf.

The Sagueneens keeper will be able to play again Jan. 3.
