Kings claim Marty Murray off waivers from Flyers and put Brent Sopel on IR

Murray, 31, had 15 points (2-13) and four penalty minutes in 11 games with the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms. The five-foot-nine, 180-pound native of Deloraine, Man., has 71 points (31-40) and 37 penalty minutes in 242 NHL regular-season games with the Flyers, Carolina and Calgary.

He was originally selected by Calgary in the fourth-round, 96th overall, in the 1993 entry draft.

Sopel, 29, has nine points (4-5) and four penalty minutes in 14 games with the Kings this season. The six-foot-two, 205-pound native of Calgary has missed the last two games due to injury. The assignment to injured reserve is retroactive to Nov. 4.

CANUCKS MOVE: Defenceman Nathan McIver of Summerside, P.E.I., was reassigned to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose after playing one game for the Vancouver Canucks. Defenceman Phil Cole of Winnipeg was released from a professional tryout contract and sent to the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings to make room for McIver.

POTULNY RECALLED: Centre Ryan Potulny has been recalled by the Flyers from their AHL farm team in Philadelphia. The 22-year-old American centre, a college all-star at Minnesota last winter, had four points (2-2) and eight penalty minutes in eight AHL games.

ZANON RECALLED: The Nashville Predators have recalled defenceman Greg Zanon from their AHL affiliate in Milwaukee. Zanon, 26, from Burnaby, B.C., played Thursday and Friday for the Admirals on a conditioning assignment.

BROOKBANK DEMOTED: Defenceman Wade Brookbank and left-winger Jeff Hoggan were sent to the Providence, R.I., AHL affiliate and right-winger Petr Tenkrat has been recalled by the Boston Bruins.

WILLIAMS HURT: Detroit forward Jason Williams will miss at least two more games while recovering from the concussion he suffered after being checked by Edmonton’s Raffi Torres last Wednesday.
