The New York Islanders reported black and white alternate may have leaked, and Islanders fans probably aren’t going to be too happy. The jersey, which is almost entirely black, features a few white stripes, white collar and only a hint of orange.
Sorry, Islanders fans: prepare to be underwhelmed. It was reported yesterday that the New York Islanders would be adopting a black and white alternate jersey for the 2015-16 season and a new leak may offer fans a first glimpse at the new threads. Unfortunately, the jersey isn’t great. Instead of somehow combining the black and white, the jersey is instead simply giving a few white lines to break up the absence of color. The collar, for instance, has white around the back, the sleeves contain four thin white stripes and the cuffs of the jersey also have white piping. Oh, and the logo is white, with four orange bands on the logo’s stick.
(Image via SportsLogos.net) It’s not official and the Islanders have yet to have their unveiling, so keep that in mind when criticizing the jersey. There’s a possibility this isn’t the actual alternate sweater. That said, one thing to note in the collar is the design and shape. Because of the placement of the NHL shield, the jersey appears to be a children’s uniform and not the adult version. While that doesn’t mean there will be big, bold differences between the two, at the very least the collar might look more like the rest of the jerseys throughout the league. Also of note is the blue and orange inside the collar. While it’s a nice tip of the cap to the Islanders’ primary colors, it would have been great if the design could have incorporated the franchise’s primary colors in some more meaningful way. Brett Yormark, CEO of the Barclays Center, told then-IslandersPointBlank reporter Chris Botta in 2013 that the outcry from fans regarding the switch to black and white as the team’s primary colors was enough to scrap the idea. After looking at this leaked jersey, though, one has to wonder if they shouldn’t have scrapped the idea completely. If this is the look the Islanders are going with, it’s not likely to be a hit with the fans.
