Lightning fire back at Jimmy Fallon, poke fun at New York Rangers fandom

The Tampa Bay Lightning fired back at Jimmy Fallon following his “Tonight Show Superlatives” segment and made fun of his New York Rangers fandom. In the segment, several headshots of Lightning players were comedy fodder, but Tampa Bay’s social media team found a great headshot of Fallon to execute the perfect jab.

Hockey doesn’t often get mentioned on late night talk shows, so with Jimmy Fallon making a habit of using NHL headshots as set-ups in a segment called “Tonight Show Superlatives,” players and teams were sure to take notice. And one team in particular caught wind of the Stanley Cup final version of the gag.

In Fallon’s most recent iteration of the segment, he used photos of players from both the Tampa Bay Lightning and Chicago Blackhawks to crack up his audience. For instance, Lightning pivot Valtteri Filppula was called an evil villain with a hairless cat and center Brian Boyle was said to have the same hair as the cartoon character Aladdin. Those were two of the tamer jokes, too.

With those jabs fresh in their mind, Tampa Bay set out to seek some revenge. If you ask us, they got it. Take a look at the Lightning taking down Fallon and his hometown New York Rangers in their own version of the game:

That’s has to sting a bit for both Fallon and Rangers fans everywhere.

Throughout the post-season, the Lightning have been the butt of the joke during the segment, so this could simply be a case where enough was enough and Tampa Bay decided they had to fire back. Or maybe they were thinking on their feet and decided messing with Fallon was the way to go. Either way, it’s a job well done by the Lightning’s social media team.

Things might get awkward should Tampa Bay win the Stanley Cup, though. Championship teams have made a habit of appearing on the talk show circuit, so Fallon might have some tough questions to answer.
