Manchester Monarchs winger Teddy Purcell named AHL rookie of the year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The American Hockey League on Friday named right wing Teddy Purcell of the Manchester Monarchs the winner of the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL’s outstanding rookie for the 2007-08 season.

Purcell, a 22-year-old native of St. John’s, Nfld., was named to the league’s all-rookie team Wednesday and was selected a first team AHL all-star Thursday. With 10 days remaining in the regular season, he ranks first among rookies and fourth overall in the league with 55 assists and 77 points in 64 games for Manchester.

The award is voted on by AHL coaches, players and media in each of the league’s 29 member cities.
