Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu leaves NHL game with hand injury

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu left Friday night’s game against Anaheim after one period with a hand injury.

Koivu was injured when he blocked a shot by Todd Marchant. Wild coach Todd Richards said Koivu is expected to be re-evaluated Saturday.

Koivu, who scored Minnesota’s first goal in the 5-1 win, leads the Wild with 49 points and is third on the team with 15 goals.

“I saw right away when he blocked that shot that something happened, and you don’t want to see that happen,” goalie Niklas Backstrom said. “It’s part of the game, injuries, and you have to try to live with it and survive.

“Everyone stepped up. It’s not just one player that can fill his spot. Everyone on the ice has to be better.”
