Montgomery’s goal proves to be the winner as Monsters edge Heat 3-2

CLEVELAND – Kevin Montgomery’s second-period goal proved to be the winner as the Lake Erie Monsters edged the Abbotsford Heat 3-2 in American Hockey League action Sunday.

Montgomery scored at 14:11 of the second to give Lake Erie (25-22-8) a 3-1 lead. Matt Keith replied for Abbotsford (23-22-7) at 19:41 but the Heat couldn’t beat John Grahame for the tying goal as neither team scored in the third.

With the win, Lake Erie moved five points ahead of Abbotsford in the North Division standings. The Monsters are third with 58 points, three behind second-place Hamilton, while the Heat is fifth with 53 points.

David Van der Gulik and Matthew Ford had the other goals for the Monsters. Grahame finished with 26 saves.

Cam Cunning also scored for the Heat while Leland Irving and Jean-Phillippe Lamoureaux combined to stop 25 shots.
