FREDERICTON – National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman will attend the Willie O’Ree dinner in Fredericton on Tuesday night.
Krista Morrissey, executive director of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, calls it excellent news.
Bettman will be guest speaker at a dinner commemorating O’Ree’s 50th anniversary of breaking the NHL colour barrier.
Bettman, however will not be able to attend Wednesday’s renaming ceremony for the Fredericton northside sports complex, to Willie O’Ree Place.
O’Ree, now 72 and living in California, is the league’s director of youth development and ambassador for diversity.
He played professional hockey for 21 years, including two in the NHL. (CFRK)
