After seeing the Maple Leafs struggle lately in the final minutes of regulation and overtime, and with Canada’s loss to Sweden in the WJC, I think there should be a new statistic for all NHL teams that determine how well they maintain a winning position late in the game. Maybe call it “potential wins.”
A potential win would be a win in any way, any overtime or shootout loss, or where a game-tying or game-winning goal is scored by the opposition with five minutes or less remaining in the third period.
The wins a team has, divided by potential wins would create a percentage of wins converted.
This would be near equivalent to a save statistic in baseball and I think hockey fans would be interested in answering the question of which teams are better during the most crucial times in a game.
