Ondrej Pavelec, Dustin Byfuglien, Sidney Crosby named NHL stars of week

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Goaltender Ondrej Pavelec and defenceman Dustin Byfuglien of the Atlanta Thrashers, plus Pittsburgh Penguins centre Sidney Crosby are the NHL’s three stars of the week.

Pavelec took the first star honours after stopping 97 of 99 shots to beat Detroit, Montreal and Boston. His season goals-against average is down to 1.62 and his save percentage sits at .949, third in the league in both categories.

Byfuglien led all defencemen in scoring with six points (two goals, four assists), including his league-leading fifth game-winner of the season. He leads all blue-liners in goals (nine) and points (25) in 24 games.

Crosby recorded seven points (four goals, three assists) as the Penguins won all four of their games.

He headed into Monday’s play as the NHL’s leading scorer with 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists), one more than Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos.
