OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators moved to cut ties with Jonathan Cheechoo on Monday by placing the former 56-goal scorer on waivers.
If he clears, the Senators can then buy out the US$3.5 million his contract calls for next season, and both are expected to happen.
The Senators acquired Cheechoo with Milan Michalek in the trade that sent Dany Heatley to the San Jose Sharks last September.
The 29-year-old from Moose Factory, Ont., recorded just five goals with nine assists in 61 games for Ottawa, and added eight goals and six assists in 25 games for AHL Binghamton.
Cheechoo led the NHL with 56 goals in 2005-06 but has production has declined steadily and sharply since.
