Pittsburgh’s championship ring is nearly nine carats, and shines bright thanks to 18 yellow diamonds used to make up the Penguins’ logo.
How do you remember a Stanley Cup victory forever? With 300 diamonds, of course.
The Pittsburgh Penguins were presented with their Stanley Cup rings during a ceremony Monday, and it’s going to be near impossible for anyone on the team to forget about the victory given the sheer size and sparkle of their newest piece of jewellery.
The rings, designed by Jostens and handed out at a ceremony at Pittsburgh’s Heinz History Center, are absolutely spectacular looking, with Pittsburgh’s color combination and gold accents popping amidst a sea of diamonds. All told, the ring has 300 diamonds and is nearly nine carats.
“These unique and brilliant rings will always be an inspiring symbol of what our players and coaches accomplished by winning the Stanley Cup,” said Penguins president and CEO David Morehouse. “On behalf of our owners, Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, as well as our players and coaches, I want to thank Jostens for the creativity and craftsmanship that went into this very special Stanley Cup championship ring project.”
The majority of the diamonds were used to give the ring’s outer edges a shine, as well as being placed inside the number of each player and the Stanley Cups — four of them, one for each of the franchise’s victories — on the right panel of the ring.
It’s the yellow diamond placement that really completes the ring, though. On each ring, 18 yellow diamonds make up the yellow background of the Penguins’ logo, and the diamonds making up the logo don’t end there. One half-carat, pear-shaped diamond is on the breast of the Penguins logo and one “baguette diamond” is used on the stick blade.
As has become custom with most rings, the Penguins also used the inside of the ring to help commemorate the victory. The inside of the band features the scores of each series, from first round to Stanley Cup final, and also bears the words “Just Play,” which was the team’s motto during the 2015-16 campaign.
While the 300-diamond rings are for the team only, Jostens has given fans a way to get in on the action. The ring-makers have set up a website where fans can purchase Stanley Cup championship memorabilia of their own, including bands, cufflinks, earrings, pendants, bracelets, keychains, pins and paperweights. However, the most interesting piece of fan merchandise is the replica ring.
Starting at $199 for men and $179 for women, rings can be purchased to celebrate the victory. The rings, like the actual Stanley Cup rings, can be engraved on the band and have a name on the side, but they won’t carry quite the heft of the Penguins’ actual rings. The most expensive fan ring — with 16 diamonds and 10-karat white gold — will run $2,200.
