Penguins star Sidney Crosby misses second game due to groin injury

The 19-year-old star forward took part in the pre-game warmup with the rest of his Pittsburgh Penguins teammates but was scratched from the lineup against the New York Islanders.

Crosby was hurt during a 5-3 victory in Philadelphia on Monday night, his 100th NHL game. He was optimistic the following day that he would be ready to play against the Boston Bruins, but was ruled out following that morning’s skate.

Before this injury, Crosby had missed only one other game during his brief career. He played in 81 of the Penguins’ 82 games last season.

He entered play Friday tied for fourth in the NHL in scoring with 30 points – 10 goals and 20 assists – in 19 games. He is the leading vote-getter among Eastern Conference players in fan balloting for the all-star game in January.

Crosby’s status was uncertain for Saturday night’s home game against the New York Rangers.
