PHILADELPHIA – Luca Sbisa is on his way back to the Western Hockey League.
The Philadelphia Flyers sent the 19-year-old defenceman back to his junior team in Lethbridge on Monday. He’s expected to be in the Hurricanes lineup when they visit Portland on Wednesday.
He only dressed once for the Flyers after Jan. 10.
“We feel that it is in the best interest of Luca and the Flyers organization that he gets back to playing on a regular basis,” GM Paul Holmgren said in a statement.
Sbisa was selected 19th overall by Philadelphia in June and made the team out of training camp.
He’s appeared in 39 games this season but saw his playing time reduced drastically over the last month. That won’t be an issue in the WHL.
“I am really looking forward to playing a lot of minutes there, play the power play, (penalty kill) and the last minutes of a game,” Sbisa was quoted as saying on the Flyers website. “I kind of missed that stuff. This is just another experience that I have to go through.
“I am disappointed, but I am looking forward to getting a lot of playing time.”
