Picks in the THN office pool

There’s nothing complicated about our office pool. It’s a straight point pool, 14 of us and 12 rounds of selections. We held it Wednesday at noon.

I went with my traditional cast of veteran players, a strategy that always keeps me competitive and routinely in the money. Besides Martin St-Louis in the first round, I also picked venerables such as Joe Sakic, Daniel Alfredsson, Keith Tkachuk and Robert Lang. The average age of my team is more than 33.

Here were the top 10 picks:

10. Martin St-Louis. Lecavalier’s set-up man is the leader of my veteran team.

9. Pavel Datsyuk. Two-time bottom feeder, content specialist Rory Boylen can’t go wrong here.

8. Jason Spezza.
Rookie designer Erika Vanderveer comes through with solid first pick ever.

7. Jarome Iginla.
Vacationing writer Ryan Kennedy will be happy with this selection for him.

6. Dany Heatley. Picked with authority by editor-in-chief Jason Kay: “I guess, Dany Heatley.”

5. Vincent Lecavalier. Too busy for pool, senior writer Ken Campbell’s proxy lands Vinny.

4. Joe Thornton. Biggest man-crush in hockey: art director Jamie Hodgson and his man Joe.

3. Evgeni Malkin. Great young player taken too high here by freelance editor John ‘Griggsy’ Grigg.

2. Sidney Crosby. editor Edward Fraser fell off his chair when Crosby slipped to No. 2.

1. Alex Ovechkin.
Writer/columnist Adam Proteau made him first pick without hesitation.
