Player of the Week – Jan. 4

The Hockey News player of the week for the period of Dec. 27-Jan. 3 is Ottawa Senators winger Alex Kovalev.

In four games on the week Kovalev notched six points and a plus-6 rating after surprisingly being left off the Russian Olympic team.

After being held scoreless against his former team from Montreal, Kovalev potted an assist and recorded four shots in 21 minutes of ice time in a 4-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.

In a shootout win against the Islanders, Kovalev was again held without a point, but exploded three nights later with his best game of the season as the Sens faced the Flyers. In the 7-4 victory, Kovalev delivered four goals and added an assist on four shots. The game-winner he notched was his second of the season.
