Player of the Week – March 2

The Hockey News’ player of the week for Feb. 23 to March 1, 2009 is New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur.

The 36-year-old, first ballot Hall of Famer returned to action last week and it was like he was never gone. Brodeur posted his first victories since an elbow injury sidelined him in early November and did it in style.

For the week, Brodeur was 3-0-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average, a .971 save percentage and two shutouts in games versus Colorado and playoff-bound Florida and Philadelphia.

The victories gave Brodeur 547 for his career, four shy of Patrick Roy’s NHL record. The shutouts were his 99th and 100th, leaving him three shy of Terry Sawchuk’s all-time mark. With the way the Devils are playing of late and Brodeur’s seeming return to mid-season form, expect both marks to fall soon.
