Player of the Week – Nov. 8

The Hockey News player of the week for the period of Nov. 1-7 is Vancouver Canucks left winger Raffi Torres.

An unlikely winner to be sure, Torres went on a tear through four games last week.

First, in a 3-0 shutout of New Jersey, Torres took one shot on net in 11:21 of ice time and found the back of the net for what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

The very next night Vancouver was in Edmonton against the struggling Oilers and Torres took advantage. He logged a season-high 16:32 of ice time and six shots on net resulting in a hat trick and a plus-1 rating. Again Torres scored the game-winning goal, this time in a 4-3 nail-biter.

In Colorado two nights later, the Canucks won again, this time 3-1 and Torres appeared on the shore sheet with his seventh goal of the season. In 15:18 of ice time his marker was his second power play goal and point of the season as he recorded four shots.

Finally, ending the week back home against Detroit, Vancouver won its sixth game in a row with a 6-4 defeat of the Detroit Red Wings. Torres failed to score in this one, but registered a shot in 15:26 of ice time and also put up an assist to increase his scoring streak to four games.

On the year, Torres has seven goals and nine points in 13 games – on the week he managed five goals and six points in four games.

The Canucks currently sit third in the Western Conference with an 8-3-2 record and face Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto this week in the first three games of a five-game road trip.
