Thoughts n’ such after my too-brief vacation:
• That the Hurricanes would trade a defensive presence and dressing room leader such as Kevyn Adams speaks volumes of their blueline woes. Dennis Seidenberg is a capable band-aid fix, but the suddenly resurgent Coyotes come out the winner on this deal.
• Journeyman pro Jarrod Skalde, now playing for Leksand in Sweden, named his young son Skate. Skate Skalde. Which means that, one day, the following phrase will be uttered at an arena: Skate, Skate, skate!
• Quote of the Break – 5-foot-10 Maple Leafs rookie Kris Newbury, on jousting with Bruins captain and Human Mountain Zdeno Chara New Year’s Day:
“I tried to give him a two-hand punch and he didn’t really budge, so it will probably be the last time I do that.”
• Stephen Colbert brilliant quote of the Break – From EntertainmentWeekly.com, on the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit, which named its mascot “Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle” in tribute to the satirist (Click HERE to read the article).
Colbert: “I don’t think that the Ontario Hockey League gets the coverage it deserves in the media, and I’m glad that my relationship with them can finally give them the national attention they deserve, especially the way that the Spirit has brought the pain to the Frontenacs.”
• Movies I saw over the Break: Déjà vu, Blood Diamond, The Queen, Iraq For Sale, The Good Shepherd, Children of God, Heavy Metal Parking Lot, The Wicker Man.
• Movies I saw over break that made me wanna seek therapy: Déjà vu, The Wicker Man.
Saying the canes lost the trade with Phoenix because they moved a defensive presence and dressing room leader is ridiculous. You should do some more research before you write. Even canes fans know Adams has lost his place in the dressing room and has been fighting with several team mates. He’s been very ineffective this year, has seen limited ice time even when healthy and is already being replaced by younger players such as Chad LaRose. Add onto that the fact that he’s a ufa, a career 4th liner at best and in his 30’s and I fail to see how Carolina could not be the winners in this trade. They acquire a young enough defenseman who wasn’t given much of a chance in the past. Seidenberg is a player that Jim Rutherford has had his eye on for some time and I think he got him pretty cheap. Seidenberg w ill also fit into the future plans of this team and who knows, Adams may very well be back over the summer.
