The late-1990s Detroit-Colorado rivalry is going to be reborn at the alumni game, as Red Wings legend Steve Yzerman will be suiting up at the Stadium Series and he’ll be joined by former ‘Grind Line’ fan favorite Darren McCarty.

Steve Yzerman may have been applauding his team’s 3-2 victory over Detroit Wednesday night, but come Feb. 26, he’ll be slipping on a Red Wings jersey and skating in his former red and white.
It was announced Wednesday that Yzerman has been added to the alumni game roster for the contest ahead of the Stadium Series game between Detroit and Colorado. Yzerman, who spent his entire career with the Red Wings, wasn’t on the initial roster for the game, but his addition adds even more intrigue to an alumni game that is the rekindling of one of the greatest on-ice rivalries of the past 20 years. But Yzerman isn’t the only addition, and he might not even be the one most fans are excited about.
It was also announced that Igor Larionov, Ty Conklin, Manny Legace, Mathieu Dandenault and Mike Knuble will suit up for Detroit, but the most interesting name added was Darren McCarty. McCarty, who made his name as part of Detroit’s ‘Grind Line’, was one of the centerpieces of the Red Wings-Avalanche rivalry. McCarty’s battles with Claude Lemieux were infamous and they could very well continue as both players will now be participating in the game. The game won’t be lacking for star power and should be somewhat of a flashback to the great games of the late-1990s. Major players from those teams will be involved, including Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Sandis Ozolinsh and Adam Foote will all be there for the Avalanche, while Yzerman, Nicklas Lidstrom, Tomas Holmstrom and Chris Chelios will suit up for the Red Wings. The additions to the Red Wings roster likely round out the rosters for the outdoor game, though Detroit is still missing a coaching staff. So is Colorado, though, so we’ll be waiting for those to be released. Marc Crawford is a bit busy and Bob Hartley can’t exactly leave his post with Calgary to come coach an alumni game, so it’s hard to say who will be behind the Avalanche bench. May we suggest Scotty Bowman for Detroit’s alumni team, though? It would be a delight to see him back coaching the Red Wings, just as he did for the entirety of the Colorado-Detroit rivalry.
