Red Wings place Maltby, facing shoulder surgery, on injured reserve list; activate Lilja

DETROIT – Red Wings forward Kirk Maltby has been placed on long-term injured reserve and will have right shoulder surgery that will sideline him for four to six weeks.

Detroit also activated defenceman Andreas Lilja from injured reserve Friday. The nine-year NHL veteran is expected to make his season debut Monday against the Colorado Avalanche.

The 37-year-old Maltby is in his 14th season with the Red Wings and 16th in the NHL. The four-time Stanley Cup champion has six points and 32 penalty minutes in 52 games this season.
