Red Wings’ Riley Sheahan scores Datsyukian highlight reel goal

Detroit Red Wing’s center Riley Sheahan undressed Calgary Flames defenseman Deryk Engelland before roofing the puck past goaltender Karri Ramo. The goal will have you thinking you’re watching a Pavel Datsyuk clip.

One would imagine when you practice alongside one of the game’s most skillful puck handlers in Pavel Datsyuk, you might pick up a thing or two. It appears Detroit’s Riley Sheahan has done just that.

During the first period of the Red Wings Wednesday night meeting with the Calgary Flames, the 23-year-old Sheahan scored a goal that was shades of the Russian superstar. From the quick hands to the ridiculous ability to somehow tuck this puck in, it’ll be a goal on Sheahan’s personal reel for years.

The goal comes almost out of nowhere. You can be sure Calgary netminder Karri Ramo and defenseman Deryk Engelland certainly weren’t thinking, “Riley Sheahan? Oh, he’s definitely cutting this back into the middle.” Engelland looks content to simply drive Sheahan wide.

Drafted 21st overall by the Red Wings in 2010, the goal was the second year center’s eighth of the season and puts him on pace to net roughly sixteen goals in 2014-15. It’s hard to imagine any of the goals he scores over the remainder of the season will be quite as pretty.
