Report: Burke in talks with Maple Leafs, presented with ‘term sheet’

Brian Burke could be the new Maple Leafs GM by the end of this week.

According to a report from Canadian sports network TSN, Burke has been in communication with the Leafs brass and is currently in possession of a “term sheet” – not to be confused with a formal contract – that outlines terms and conditions to be contained in a formal offer.

“It’s certainly headed in the right direction,” Burke told TSN, “but it’s not it done yet. I anticipate it will get done but it’s not done.”

The deal is thought to be a six-year pact worth about $3 million per season. Burke stopped short of saying there was an agreement in principle because there were a few items that still needed to be discussed.

The former Anaheim GM who was replaced Nov. 12 by Bob Murray, has been long-rumored to be the lead candidate for the GM job in Toronto. While a deal appears near, Burke went on to tell TSN he didn’t anticipate anything would be done Tuesday to further the process.
