DETROIT – Chris Chelios’ won’t wear a Detroit Red Wings jersey again next season.
The Detroit Free Press reported Monday the Red Wings have told the veteran defenceman he won’t be re-signed after 10 years with the team.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland thanked Chelios for his time in Detroit.
“I met with Chelios and told him we would not be offering him a contract,” Holland said. “He wants to play again. I really think that he does have another year in him. I think he can play 10 to 15 minutes. I think he can play on a third pair.”
Chelios, 47, was scoreless in 28 games last season. Over his 26-year career he has 948 points (185 goals, 763 assists) in 1,644 games.
