Revered hockey theme song gets new recording for debut on TSN

TORONTO – The iconic hockey theme revered by many as the unofficial national anthem has a new recording for its TSN debut.

The song, long associated with CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, has been re-recorded by 54 members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

While the recording holds true to the version fans are used to it also adds more percussion, giving it a very 1960s feel.

The theme, which TSN will use in its NHL hockey broadcasts starting in October, was written in 1968 by Vancouver composer Dolores Claman.

It had been a staple on CBC until earlier this year, when the public broadcaster’s rights to the song expired and it failed to reach a new agreement with the rights holders.

CBC is hosting a contest to search for new theme music and is planning to announce the winner during the Oct. 11 Hockey Night in Canada broadcast.
