Sabres forward Leino suspended one game for elbow to head of Flyers’ Read

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Buffalo Sabres forward Ville Leino has been suspended for one game for elbowing Philadelphia’s Matt Read.

It was the third suspension doled out by the NHL on Thursday. Leino will forfeit US$24,324.32 in salary.

The incident occurred at 1:32 of the third period of Philadelphia’s 5-4 overtime victory over Buffalo on Wednesday. Leino hit Read in the head with an elbow as he attempted to steal the puck. No penalty was called on the play.

“We feel that even without intent, this reckless open-ice elbow to the side of Read’s head rises to the level of requiring supplemental discipline,” league disciplinarian Brendan Shannahan said.

Leino will miss Friday’s game against Florida. He will be eligible to return Saturday against the New York Rangers.
