BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Sabres re-assigned rookie forward Nathan Gerbe to their AHL team in Portland on Wednesday, clearing the way for centre Paul Gaustad to make his return from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him the past six games.
The five-foot-six Gerbe was on his second stint with the Sabres, but has been unable to provide much offence. In 10 games, he’s picked up just one assist.
Gaustad was hurt in a game against Toronto on Feb. 4. His return will bolster the power play, where he gives the Sabres a big body in front of the net.
The Sabres (30-22-6), who play Philadelphia on Thursday, have 66 points, tying them with Montreal, Florida, and the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference. They currently sit sixth based on tiebreakers.
