San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton named NHL first star of the week

NEW YORK – San Jose Sharks centre Joe Thornton is the NHL’s first star of the week.

He had seven goals and one assist in four games last week to help the Sharks clinch the Pacific Division title for the third time in franchise history.

Nashville Predators goaltender Dan Ellis is the second star and Boston Bruins centre David Krejci is the third star.

Thornton had three goals and one assist in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Phoenix Coyotes last Tuesday. Two nights later, Thornton scored twice – including the OT winner – in a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars. He was held without a point in a 3-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday. On Sunday, Thornton scored twice in a 3-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Thornton leads the Sharks with 93 points (28 goals and 65 assists) in 79 games.

Ellis posted a 2-0-1 record last week with two shutouts, a 0.33 goals-against average and a .991 save percentage. He had a franchise-record shutout streak of 233 minutes 39 seconds snapped in a 1-0 overtime loss to Detroit on Sunday.

Krejci had three goals and five assists in four games last week.
