Ailing Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, who announced his dire need for a new liver last week, underwent successful transplant surgery in Toronto Tuesday and is resting comfortably, the team announced.

Ailing Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk underwent successful liver transplant surgery in a Toronto hospital Tuesday, the team announced in a news release.

The 55-year-old Melnyk, who went public last week with his dire need for a new liver, had surgery at Toronto General Hospital at noon today. The transplant was successfully finished more than eight hours later. The team said he and the anonymous donor are resting comfortably. He and his family thanked everyone who responded to his request for help, including the donor and their family.

A progress update on Melnyk and the anonymous donor is expected for later this week.
