Smith scores tiebreaker in third as Griffins defeat Manitoba Moose, 3-2

WINNIPEG – Brendan Smith scored at 12:43 of the third period to give the Grand Rapids Griffins their second straight victory over the Manitoba Moose, 3-2 on Saturday night in the American Hockey League.

The Griffins (2-1-1) defenceman took a pass from left winger Tomas Tater and let go a low shot from the point that squeaked through the pads of Moose (2-2-0) goalie Tyler Weiman.

Grand Rapids opened the scoring in the first period when Derek Meech blasted a shot from the point, finding the stick of Joakim Andersson for the tip into the top corner of the net.

At 7:48 of the second Moose centre Marco Rosa won a faceoff back to defenceman Lee Sweatt who threw a wrist shot through a screen and past Griffins goalie Joey MacDonald.

Ilari Filppula put the Griffins back ahead five minutes later with a deflected shot that caught Weiman out of position.

Manitoba’s rookie forward Stefan Schneider evened it, scooping up a loose puck while skating into the Griffins zone and leaned into a wrist shot from the slot that deflected off the crossbar and in.
