Stars’ Roussel, Blackhawks’ Shaw throw down in Fight of the Year candidate

In Sunday’s game between Dallas and Chicago, Antoine Roussel and Andrew Shaw dropped the gloves and squared off. Fists were flying as the two battled in what may be the Fight of the Year.

Chicago Blackhawks center Andrew Shaw has fought twice in the last two seasons. Both bouts have been with Dallas Stars winger Antoine Roussel. Safe to say the two don’t like each other very much, and the pair renewed hostilities on Sunday night.

Midway through the first period, with the Stars up 2-1, Shaw came across behind Roussel, and whatever Shaw said certainly sparked something in his opponent. Roussel immediately turned, the gloves were off, and the two threw haymakers in a sure Fight of the Year candidate:

It’s hard to say how these two became such rivals, but all evidence points to Roussel’s antics following a penalty shot goal against the Blackhawks in late 2013. During the game, Roussel had already been quite the pest and had fought Shaw earlier in the game. With the go-ahead goal on his stick on the penalty shot, Roussel backhanded one past Blackhawks netminder Corey Crawford.

Roussel immediately mocked the crowd, lifting his arms to “pump them up” and cupping his hand to hear them jeer. Since then, Roussel has been a thorn in the Blackhawks side, and it was no surprise to see he and Shaw fighting once again.

Chicago went on to a 6-2 victory, and the two sides will meet again in January at the United Center. Don’t be shocked if Shaw and Roussel go for round three.
