Should coaches be allowed to challenge an obvious messed up call, or should refs be allowed to review a penalty through instant replay?
This is a big stretch, because most penalties could have logic to them, and could be justified, but there are calls like the Danny Briere’s tripping penalty versus Montreal that are absolutely not fair, since it can change the momentum and the outcome of a game, like this call did.
The refs could even use the instant replay to make a decision as to whether or not a player dove when tapped lightly by the opposing player.
The penalty calls would be that much more accurate. True, this could slow down the game quite a bit, but do what the NFL does, which is give the coaches either one challenge per period, or two or three for the entire game.
If they are wrong, they get penalized or lose their timeout.
The specifics would have to be argued and figured out, but I think that this is a great idea.
This isn’t an idea that came to me because of this play Thursday night; it has been brewing in my mind for a while. But this play certainly gave me the idea to actually whine about it.
