Player News…

B.J. Crombeen, RW, St. Louis Blues
2008/12/09: Rookie winger B.J. Crombeen’s first career hat trick powered St. Louis to a 6-3 victory over visiting Nashville Monday. He also tallied an assist and was plus-2 in the win.: An impressive outing for the rookie, but don’t expect this to be a regular thing for him; Crombeen was claimed off waivers Nov.18 from Dallas and is averaging just 0:06 of power-play time per game for the Blues.

Kris Versteeg, RW/LW, Chicago Blackhawks
2008/12/09: Tied for the league lead in rookie scoring, Blackhawks winger Kris Versteeg was handed a one-game suspension by the NHL on Monday. A suspension is automatic when a player is assessed an instigator penalty in a game’s final five minutes, which Versteeg did Sunday at home against Phoenix. Versteeg has 22 points over 25 games this season but will sit out Wednesday when Ottawa visits, according to the Chicago Daily Herald.

Mats Sundin, C, Free Agent
2008/12/09: According to several media outlets, free agent veteran center Mats Sundin is nearing a decision on which NHL team he will play for (although a decision does not appear imminent). Sundin, 37, totalled 78 points (32 goals, 46 assists) over 74 games last season for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Pekka Rinne, G, Nashville Predators
2008/12/09: Possibly daunted by being named the NHL’s First Star of the week earlier on Monday, rookie goaltender Pekka Rinne had his worst start of the season at St. Louis. The big young Predator allowed five goals on 25 shots in the 6-3 loss, his first defeat of the season. He is 6-1-0 so far.

Antti Pihlstrom, LW/RW, Nashville Predators
2008/12/09: Playing in his eighth NHL game, Predators rookie winger Antti Pihlstrom scored his first career goal in Monday’s 6-3 loss to the Blues. He had recorded his first assist two games earlier.

Kevin Klein, D, Nashville Predators
2008/12/09: Rookie defenseman Kevin Klein has spent a lot of time in the press box this year, but had a solid game in a 6-3 Predators loss in St. Louis on Monday. He scored his second goal of the year and was plus-1 in 13:28.

Injury News…

Marc-Andre Fleury, G, Pittsburgh Penguins
2008/12/09: Despite losing Monday (4-3 at home to Buffalo), the Penguins got some good news Monday when injured No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury practiced with the team, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He hasn’t played since November 15 due to an undisclosed injury. Dany Sabourin has been very solid filling in. The four goals he allowed Monday are the most he has yielded in a game this season.

Stephane Yelle, C/W, Boston Bruins
2008/12/08: The Bruins lost veteran center Stephane Yelle in the second period of Monday’s 5-3 win over the Lightning. He suffered an undisclosed injury in a collision with a lineseman and did not return to the game.

Cory Stillman, LW/RW, Florida Panthers
2008/12/08: Veteran winger Cory Stillman may be able to play during Florida’s four-game away trip through Canada that starts Monday at Ottawa, according to the Miami Herald. Stillman, 34, is currently on Injured Reserve due to post-concussion symptoms and has missed 10 straight contests.

Rostislav Olesz, LW/RW, Florida Panthers
2008/12/08: Skilled Panthers winger Rostislav Olesz (groin) might be back in Florida’s lineup at some point in his team’s four-contest road swing through Canada, according to the Miami Herald. The Panthers play Monday at Ottawa. Olesz has missed just one game with the problem so it doesn’t appear serious. He continues to underachieve for Florida, managing just five points in 23 games this season.

Richard Zednik, RW/LW, Florida Panthers
2008/12/08: According to the Miami Herald, veteran Florida sniper Richard Zednik (elbow) may be ready to return to the Panthers’ lineup sometime on the team’s four-game road swing through Canada (which starts Monday at Ottawa), but head coach Peter DeBoer says “there are no guarantees.” Zednik has missed six straight games due to the injury.

Sami Salo, D, Vancouver Canucks
2008/12/08: Veteran rearguard Sami Salo left in the first period of Vancouver’s 5-4 shootout loss at Colorado on Sunday after apparently hurting his groin. He did not return. Head coach Alain Vigneault told the Vancouver Province Salo appears to have “tweaked” the groin, but was uncertain how long the defenseman might be sidelined.

Brian Willsie, RW, Colorado Avalanche
2008/12/07: Colorado Avalanche winger Brian Willsie will be sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury, according to the Rocky Mountain News. Willsie sustained the injury on Thursday during a 3-2 loss to Nashville. Rookie winger Chris Stewart has taken his spot in the lineup, posting a minus-1 rating in his first outing.
