The Hockey News mobile app surpasses half-million-download mark with launch of VIP alerts

The Hockey News mobile application, relaunched with a new VIP section providing instant game and breaking news alerts earlier this month, recently surpassed 500,000 downloads, putting it in the top 10 in the sports category in Canada on both iPhone and Blackberry.

“We have seen tremendous success with THN mobile and are excited to continue to evolve this application,” Tom Emrich, Transcontinental Media’s product manager for mobile and eReader platforms, said. “The launch of the VIP program not only takes the THN application to the next level, but it also utilizes a brand new platform for THN – mobile messaging – that has a much wider reach amongst the general handset population.”
As an upgrade to the existing free THN app, which was originally launched in 2008, THN VIP is an optional monthly subscription-based program at $2 per month, which grants members access to an exclusive area offering the alerts on both devices and THN mobile-exclusive video on the iPhone only. VIP members are able to customize the type of alerts they wish to receive along with selecting the hockey teams they wish to follow.

In addition to the smartphone VIP programs, The Hockey News now supports all message-capable handsets by launching its text alert program. Offering the same alerts as VIP app members, subscribers can receive game reminders, score changes as well as breaking hockey news for $2 per month.

The application, available on both Blackberry (reviewed at 4/5)  and iPhone (reviewed at 3/5), can be downloaded in the respective app worlds or at The text alert program can be utilized by texting THN to 22233 (standard message and data rates may apply).
