News Blog: Brind’Amour ‘nose’ best

The voting window has been closed, the votes have been tabulated, and it’s official: Rod Brind’Amour is the winner of this blog’s contest for largest nose in the NHL.

The Hurricanes’ captain wasn’t a runaway winner, but he didn’t win by an, er, nose, either. The runner-up award went to Colorado winger Ryan Smyth; third goes to Avs defenseman Adam Foote, followed by a three-way tie for fourth between Atlanta’s Colby Armstrong, Colorado’s Ian Laperriere, and Dallas’ Stephane Robidas.

Perhaps we’ll make this an annual voting event; the way hockey is played, the faces of all who made the top six could wind up looking decidedly different (if not better) by this time next year.

• How’s this for timing? I mentioned Mark Parrish as a candidate to be moved off the Minnesota Wild’s roster in yesterday’s mailbag, and a couple hours later, dude’s on waivers.

From my word processor to GM Doug Risebrough’s ears? Hardly. The writing was on the wall for Parrish as early as the middle part of last season – and with the Wild wanting to give some of their young prospects a shot at cracking the lineup this coming year, management wasn’t prepared to take a chance with a relatively pricey veteran who may or may not have a lot left to offer.

Parrish isn’t the first veteran to suffer that fate in the salary cap era and assuredly won’t be the last.

• Via the always helpful, former NHLers Stan “For the last time, it’s pronounced Nets-cash, not Neck-are” Neckar and Dave Andreychuk have partnered up to offer cigar smokers a luxurious, transportable room to indulge their passion for tobacco.

They’re calling it the Mobile Cigar Lounge. I guess “Mouth Cancer Van” was already copyrighted.
