Domi issued a written statement in response to a divorce application filed by Leanne Domi, which includes allegations of a relationship with Liberal MP Belinda Stronach – a revelation that has fuelled a media frenzy on the front pages of newspapers and call-in radio shows across Canada.
But the celebrated former Toronto Maple Leaf made no mention of his alleged relationship with Stronach, a former Liberal cabinet minister and member of the federal Conservative caucus.
Domi said he and his wife separated temporarily in 1999, but ultimately failed to rescue their marriage – a failure for which he said he accepts at least a portion of the blame.
“The truth is that after a number of years, my marriage with Leanne has unfortunately come to an end,” Domi said.
“We have worked hard on our marriage but, sadly, it has been a struggle. I accept my part of the responsibility for the failure of our marriage but it has, indisputably, been a shared failure.”
Domi said he didn’t want to speak publicly about the divorce, but felt the ensuing wave of publicity left him little choice.
“As a former professional athlete, I am accustomed to public scrutiny and well aware that even profoundly personal matters can become fodder for gossip and rumour,” Domi said.
“That does not make the experience any less unpleasant.”
He said he has instructed his lawyers to secure a divorce settlement that provides generously for his wife and children and hopes everyone can move on.
“Going forward, I will work hard to isolate my children from the pain of this process. I will concentrate on being a good father. And I will continue to build a new career beyond playing hockey.”
