Toronto Maple Leafs lose captain Dion Phaneuf 4-6 weeks with leg laceration

TORONTO – Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf is out four to six weeks after surgery to repair a “significant” cut on his left leg.

The 25-year-old defenceman was injured in the second period of Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to Ottawa when he got tangled up awkwardly with Senators forward Peter Regin.

Phaneuf needed assistance to get to the team’s dressing room and had surgery later that night, the team said in a release Wednesday.

The injury came shortly after Leafs GM Brian Burke met with reporters during the first intermission to express his disappointment at fans who booed Phaneuf during a 2-0 loss to the Rangers on Saturday.
