Travis Konecny delivers huge hit during Top Prospects Game

Team Orr’s Travis Konecny crushed Team Cherry’s Filip Chlapik in the neutral zone during last night’s BMO Top Prospects Game. Konecny would go on to add two goals, one assist, and some hardware to his trophy case as he was named MVP of the outing. Team Orr downed Team Cherry 6-0.

Though most had come to watch Erie Otters center Connor McDavid during last night’s BMO CHL Top Prospects Game, it was hard to miss Ottawa 67’s winger Travis Konecny.

Voted the game’s MVP, Konecny potted a pair of goals and had three points for Team Orr en route to a 6-0 victory over Team Cherry. But the most memorable part of Konecny’s night may have come when he cleaned out Charlottetown Islanders center Filip Chlapik with a booming open-ice hit with time winding down in the first period.

Konecny caught Chlapik so perfectly that he actually managed to pop the center’s helmet clean off. There’s no way that didn’t hurt.

In a draft year that features two of the most hyped prospects in quite a while in McDavid and Boston University center Jack Eichel, Konecny has flown somewhat under the radar. However, he seems to be a lock to be picked mid-first to early-second round of the 2015 draft.

According to NHL’s Central Scouting, he’s the 26th ranked North American skater, but other independent scouting services have him ranked much higher. Future Considerations has him as the ninth pick in the upcoming draft, while ISS Hockey and McKeen’s Hockey have him at 14th and 16th respectively. Wherever he does go, his showing at the Top Prospects Game certainly isn’t going to hurt his draft stock.
