Use match penalties to curb violent play

The NHL needs only to do one thing to reduce or eliminate cheap shots, especially those seen early in this season’s playoffs: use and enforce the existing rules.

All this talk of new rules involving head shots is a waste of time. The match penalty is a perfectly good rule to use to get guys to quit the nonsensical stuff on the ice.

During the entire regular season, only three match penalties were given out.

I’m sure that on more than three occasions someone intentionally tried to hurt another player.

Maybe a few more match penalties, which incur suspensions or fines, would get some players to think twice.
