Vancouver Canucks GM says Peter Forsberg will remain in Sweden this season

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis says former NHL star Peter Forsberg has decided to play in his native Sweden this season rather than attempting a comeback in the NHL.

Gillis had been considering signing Forsberg, who is playing for Modo of the Swedish Elite League but had been thinking about a return to the NHL.

Gillis said he learned of Forsberg’s decision Monday morning.

“My understanding is Peter is going to stay and play in Modo and he won’t return to the NHL this year,” Gillis said Monday at practice.

Forsberg has battled chronic ankle and foot problems for several years.

“It’s more of a day to day thing with his foot as opposed to a situation where he’s confident he can play,” said Gillis. “I think it’s a tribute to him that he didn’t want to put himself in a position where he was taking a roster spot and not being an everyday player in the NHL.”

Gillis did not make an offer to Forsberg.
