VIDEO: James van Riemsdyk, the prototypical Philadelphia Flyer

Chosen second overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2007 draft, James van Riemsdyk was expected to fit in nicely with the physical and fast-paced hockey played in the City of Brotherly Love. While the 6-foot-3, 200-pound New Jersey native is still growing into his massive frame, he has shown signs he’s a prototypical Flyer.

After two years of NCAA hockey at the University of New Hampshire, the 20-year-old demonstrated he was ready to take the next step when he cracked the Flyers lineup in the fall. And the young winger didn’t disappoint.

In 78 games, van Riemsdyk collected 15 goals and 20 assists in his rookie campaign. While his numbers aren’t spectacular, JVR, as he is known by his teammates, has proven he has the work ethic and tools needed to succeed in the NHL.
