The United States League’s Indiana Ice named its all-decade team, leading us to wonder what some of the other lineups would look like for development programs around the world.
The Indiana Ice of the United States League are on hiatus right now due to arena issues, but the franchise has kept itself in the game by releasing its tenth anniversary all-star team. Notable names include Washington defenseman John Carlson, Boston blueliner Torey Krug and Calgary netminding prospect Jon Gillies. Which got me thinking about other programs around the hockey world.
What would the all-time teams look like for teams in major junior, NCAA or even Europe? As a lark, I put together a couple and the results are pretty interesting. For example, here’s who the University of North Dakota could trot out:
Forwards: Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise, T.J. Oshie, Dave Tippett, Dave Christian
Defense: James Patrick, Craig Ludwig, Matt Greene, Rick Zombo
Goalie: Ed Belfour
Or how about this murderers’ row from the Ontario League’s Kitchener Rangers:
Forwards: Bill Barber, Brian Bellows, Mike Richards, Jeff Skinner, Gabriel Landeskog
Defense: Al MacInnis, Scott Stevens, Paul Coffey, Larry Robinson
Goalie: Don Edwards
And while teams in Europe aren’t designed to feed NHL teams, a lot of their best players end up coming over here anyway. Just look at Sweden’s Modo team:
Forwards: Peter Forsberg, Markus Naslund, Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin, Sammy Pahlsson
Defense: Victor Hedman, Tobias Enstrom, Anders Eriksson, O-K Tollefsen
Goalie: Tommy Salo
Some teams have strengths at one position and not others. The Quebec League’s Rimouski Oceanic for example, boasts Sidney Crosby, Brad Richards, Vincent Lecavalier, Ryane Clowe and Michael Frolik up front, but not much in the other two zones. OHL Sarnia could trot out a top line of Steven Stamkos, Alex Galchenyuk and Nail Yakupov, with Matt Martin and Trevor Letowski rounding out the forward corps, but no NHL goalie to speak of (though Patrick DesRochers had a cup of coffee or two). And the Western League’s Red Deer Rebels would have to choose between James Reimer and Cam Ward in net to go along with Dion Phaneuf on the back end, but the depth peters out a bit from there.
