The AHL’s San Diego Gulls haven’t yet announced an official reveal date for their jerseys, but EA Sports took care of showing them off to the world. In a new video promoting NHL 16, San Diego’s jerseys are on display following a post-game celebration.
Back in February, the Anaheim Ducks officially unveiled that their new San Diego-based AHL affiliate would take on the Gulls moniker that has been associated with hockey in the Southern Californian city for decades.
The name announcement came along with the unveiling of a logo, but fans have been waiting to get a glimpse of the jerseys since the Feb. 22 ceremony. Now, thanks to EA Sports and NHL 16, fans can get their first look at the Gulls’ new uniforms in a video hyping up the return of the NHL series’ famous EA Sports Hockey League game mode.
The first look at the jerseys comes 30 seconds into the trailer as the teams line up for an opening faceoff, but the best view comes at the 2:20 mark when a goaltender wearing the Gulls’ threads celebrates a victory.
The jerseys are much different that the concepts put together by Justin Cox at Mayor’s Manor earlier this year and work to incorporate all of the club’s colors, not just the Ducks’ orange, black and gold.
Many teams in the AHL have taken to replicating the big club jerseys with the AHL logo over top. The Manitoba Moose, for instance, will wear Winnipeg Jets blue when they return to the league next season instead of their previous green, black and brown color scheme. The Gulls, however, are mixing in the baby blue and orange, while rocking black across the shoulders.
The font choice for the numbers and name bars on the jerseys closely resembles that of the Ducks, and it can be best seen on the interlocking SD on the jersey’s right shoulder. On the left shoulder, the Gulls will wear the Ducks logo — putting the NHL affiliate’s logo on the AHL jerseys is something many teams have taken to doing. Overall, the design is a departure from the style the Ducks wear, which is also an interesting but welcomed choice.
That said, the white jersey looks crisp and the baby blue and orange combination is one that works well. While EA Sports did show one of the Gulls’ jerseys, mystery still remains over what the dark sweater will look like. San Diego has not released an official date for their jersey announcement.
