Windsor Spitfires beat Calgary Hitmen 6-2 at Memorial Cup

BRANDON, Man. – Taylor Hall scored twice in a 6-2 Windsor Spitfires victory over the Calgary Hitmen at the 2010 Memorial Cup.

Justin Shugg had the game-winner, while Dale Mitchell, Kenny Ryan and Adam Wallace added a goal each in front of 5,201 fans at Westman Place.

The win clinches a berth in Sunday’s final for the reigning 2009 champion Spitfires.

Jimmy Bubnick scored both Calgary goals.

Calgary goaltender Martin Jones stopped 31 of 37 shots, while his Windsor counterpart, Philipp Grubauer, made 25 saves en route to the victory.

Hall’s first of the night was a power play marker at 3:55 of the first. He took a pass from Cam Fowler, carried the puck from the red line and put it past Jones to give the Spitfires a two-goal lead and build on Mitchell’s opening tally.

The Spitfires added another and led 3-0 until Bubnick scored his first goal at 11:43 of the second period and he quickly made it a one-goal game by scoring his second at 14:56. 

Hall doubled the Spitfires lead 12 seconds into the third frame. .

Down 5-2 late in the third period, Calgary pulled Jones and Wallace’s empty net goal at 19:19 increased the Spitfires lead to 6-2.

Calgary was 0-for-3 on the power play, while Windsor was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

Windsor plays the Moncton Wildcats Tuesday, while Calgary faces the tournament host Brandon Wheat Kings Wednesday.

Notes:  The biggest cheers from the crowd came before the game with the introduction of former Brandon Wheat King, Marty Murray. Now playing for the Milwaukee Admirals of the American League, Murray hails from Deloraine, Man.
